The power of prosecutors has indeed increased significantly. Firstly, the majority of criminal cases are resolved by plea bargains, which are initiated by prosecutors rather than going through trials and convictions in courts.
Secondly, prosecutors do not just influence individual cases, but they also influence criminal justice strategies because they are de facto leaders. For instance, District Attorneys are elected at the county level yet they prosecute state-law crimes.
Thirdly, prosecutors’ actions are very consequential, especially where an individual is wrongfully sentenced, yet there is weak oversight on their activities.
