Role of Nursing Staff in Evidence-Based Practice in an Organization
The nursing staff plays a significant role in evidence-based practice (EBP) in many healthcare organizations. I work at a rehabilitation center where EBP is quite new. Also, nurses have limited participation in the treatment of patients. However, nurses in the rehabilitation center participate in the initial assessment of patients and they gather the information that is then used by doctors to decide on a treatment plan. This is in agreement with Loft, et al. (2017), who indicates that in rehabilitation the role of the nursing staff is to teach patients and provide information to doctors in both physical and psychological care areas. During this initial assessment, nurses have access to information that they then use in providing care to the patients. The use of this information has proved to be effective in facilitating patient-centered care within the rehabilitation center.
As revealed by Black, et al. (2015) EBP improves patient care and safety and enhances positive outcomes among patients. However, in our organization, EBP is only limited to personal experiences and patient assessment as the only research that can be utilized. There is a lack of organizational support to encourage nurses to conduct and use research in nursing practice. Thus, organizational support can allow nurses to play a role in developing evidence-based guidelines that will inform the standard of care as well as the general nursing practice. Another role that nurses can play in promoting EBP in our organization is conducting randomized controlled trials. The evidence gathered from such trials allows nurses to collaborate with other healthcare practitioners in improving the quality and outcomes of patient care (Kueny, et al., 2015). Our organization could benefit greatly by ensuring that nurses play their role in promoting EBP.
