The Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) is a medical analysis instrument used to assess or screen the extend and severity of depression. The tool is widely utilized in clinical trials and large local and international multicenter researches (Gili et al., 2011). The Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology usually used within a time frame of seven days to assess the severity of symptoms before evaluation. The most common versions of IDS include the self-report (IDS-SR) scale and the clinician-rated (IDS-C) (Gili et al., 2011). The two types of IDS are both sensitive to changes with medication, somatic, or psychotherapy treatments and require minimal training and expertise. Hence, they are not only essential for clinical purposes but can also be used in research.
It is appropriate to use the IDS assessment tool with clients whenever there is a need to estimate and clearly state the severity symptoms, such as all the DSM-IV strategies needed to diagnose critical depressive episodes. Secondly, it is appropriate to use the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology when there is a need for the provision of weightings for each item of a patient’s symptoms (Philipsen et al., 2010).
