(7) Religion in “The Little Mermaid” and “Rune Mountain”: a comparison (3-4 sentences).

(1) Describe the undersea world of the sea folk. How deep is the sea above? (1-2 sentences)
The undersea world is described as “blue as the petals of the loveliest cornflower” and “clear as the purest glass” with plants, trees, colorful fish, and a castle made of coral and amber, and seashells. The sea is much deeper than any anchor line can reach, and Anderson says, “scores of church towers would have to be set on top of each other to reach from the bottom up to the surface of the water.”
(2) How does the grandmother help the little mermaid prepare for her 15th birthday? (1 sentence)
The grandmother dresses her up with a wreath of white lilies on her hair with half a pearl on each petal, and 8 big oysters on her tail to show her high birth.
(3) Why does the little mermaid want an eternal soul? What is her grandmother’s response to this? (2 sentences)
The little mermaid wants an eternal soul so that she could live beyond death and get to live in the stars in the heavenly world. The grandmother does not approve of what she says, tells her that they are much happier and better off than the humans, and informs her that the only way she can have an eternal soul is by getting a human to marry her.
(4) Describe the sea witch and her realm. (1 sentence)
An extremely grotesque and terrifying image is used to describe the sea witch, who has toads in her mouth and fat water snakes over her breasts, and her realm which has a castle made from the bones of shipwrecked humans surrounded by slimy snakes and polyps.
(5) What does the little mermaid have to give the sea witch as payment? Why is this significant? (1-2 sentences)
The little mermaid must give her voice to the sea witch as payment. It is significant because she has the most beautiful voice in the sea and by giving it to the witch it makes it much harder to get the prince to marry her.
(6) Who are the daughters of the air, and why does the little mermaid join them? (1-2 sentences)
The daughters of the air are those who have no eternal soul but can create one for themselves by doing good deeds. The little mermaid joins them because by choosing her own death over the prince’s she ends her life doing a good deed and is given the opportunity to earn an eternal soul.
(7) Religion in “The Little Mermaid” and “Rune Mountain”: a comparison (3-4 sentences).
The Little Mermaid introduces the idea of heaven as something not initially available to those that live at the “bottom”. However, despite the little mermaid making poor decisions, her performing one ultimate good deed allows her the opportunity to earn her place in heaven. Meanwhile in Rune Mountain, Christian leaves a life of Christianity only to return to it and be plagued by madness and dissatisfaction from his time away from Christianity. Rune Mountain does not offer a path to redemption once one has strayed from the path of Christianity, while the Little Mermaid shows that having a good heart can allow you to earn your place in heaven.
