Should The United States Military Be Allowed To Recruit Non-Permanent Resident Immigrants?
Since the founding of the United States, many generations of Americans have come to characterize the country as the land of immigrants proudly. However, the country's treatment of non-permanent resident aliens and foreign-born populations in general points to a contrary picture (Sisk, 2021). There is a sustained opposition by the Pentagon and Defense Department towards non-permanent resident aliens' access to the primary right and privilege of defending America or even earning citizenship for their honorable service. Only those non-citizens living permanently and legally in the United States can be recruited into the U.S. military, thereby restricting non-permanent resident immigrants from defending their country (Wong & Bonaguro, 2020). This essay will study the issues surrounding the current debate about whether or not to allow non-permanent resident aliens to recruit in the U.S. military. The thesis of this essay is: The U.S. military should allow non-permanent resident immigrants to join the military because they ensure a stable supply of medical personnel, skilled interpreters, and educated officers within its ranks, thereby reducing the cost of hiring qualified military personnel and enhancing operational efficiency.
Research Design
The study used primary research sources as its main source of data for analysis: a systematic review of existing data on the research topic was conducted using online library databases. The selected databases include JSTOR, Air University Library Index, EBSCO, ProQuest, and U.S. Military Academy Library. In addition to the information available on the Internet, the study gathered relevant information assembled by government agencies and other non-government entities. The search process for pertinent articles was narrowed down using keywords derived from the research thesis. Identified reports were accessed for relevance and credibility so that only those that provided sufficient verification of reliability and validity and furthered the research aims were selected for inclusion.
After ensuring that the gathered sources could sufficiently answer the research question, analysis of the same commenced. These sources were analyzed and compared in terms of how well they examined the variables of interest surrounding the enrollment of non-permanent resident aliens and immigrant populations in general into the U.S. military. The analysis process focused on reviewing existing and previous programs that allowed immigrant recruits to join the U.S. military, benefits and criticisms of these programs, the experiences of immigrant recruits in the U.S. military, and current policies and attitudes regarding the ongoing debate about whether or not to allow non-permanent resident aliens to recruit in the U.S. military.
