Bank Case Study: ITT-370 AS 802.11 Standards
The issue with the existing wireless network is that it was built based on proprietary standards rather than 802.11. The wireless network lacks specifications and an architectural path to achieve 802.11. It is also having usability problems since customers cannot use iPads to enter information scheduling appointments with the bank’s senior officials. As a result, the organization is facing communication problems as well as poor marketing practices undermined by the existing wireless network’s poor architectural design.
Technology anchored on industry wireless protocols often presents easier and cheaper to execute options but will not necessarily provide the ideal solution for wireless network needs. Equally, proprietary standards provide the necessary solution as required but are costly in terms of implementation and development. Choosing either industry or proprietary wireless technology is based on some fundamental factors. The industry protocol should be chosen if the wireless system application closely matches the standard wireless purpose. Industry standards are also feasible when the institution lacks system designers or works with a constrained development budget. On the other hand, proprietary standards are applied when affordable hardware is needed to utilize a low-footprint (insignificant memory usage) protocol. In addition, proprietary standards prove feasible when there is a practical fit between the protocol and the bank’s wireless system application or when the industry standard is “shoehorned” into the system ...
