Off-the-shelf enterprise information systems (EIS) are standardized software applications that are produced for commercial use by the general public. An organization can purchase these readymade products freely (Thomas & Jajodia, 2004). These applications are not created to meet the specific needs of a certain firm. In that light, off-the-shelf EIS can force an organization to redesign its business processes since it does not allow for its application flexibility.
However, there are critical success factors that can ensure the implementation of EIS is successful. First, the firm that wants to implement an EIS must have a proper design of its business processes. In other words, the off-the-shelf EIS should align with the company’s business processes. Before an enterprise selects the right EIS to implement, it ought to ensure that critical business processes are facilitated by the chosen enterprise system.
