WRIT 307 Project 5 Assignment Feasibility Study Point Value 175 Length / Format 1,600 – 1,800 words; does not include Title Page, Abstract, Table of Contents, References, Appendices, etc. What is Required? / Goals / Description (AKA “Why we’re doing this”) Feasibility Studies are common in technical environments. We did these all the time w/ FERC when trying to determine “ideal” flows from hydropower facilities. They are used in the automobile industry to determine which car to produce during a given year, and are used by the DOT to determine the best location to widen the road. Essentially, Feasibility Studies evaluate different / competing options by using specific criteria to determine the best solution. Your White Paper, ideally, is already leaning in that direction. The goal / point of the feasibility study is to “lay out” your thinking and assessment of a decision in a format that promotes objectivity. Ideally, by the time you reach the recommendation / conclusion, your audience will already be on board with the decision that you make. Most feasibility studies do this by identifying the decision-making criteria, more intentionally showing how options match the criteria, and assessing the results. For PRO 5, we will use the White Paper as a base to approach some elements of a Feasibility Study. It will include all the components from PRO 4, including: Required Sections • Title / Abstract / Table of Contents • Introduction / History of Problem • Options / Benchmarks • 3 visuals embedded in paper • Works Cited / References (depending on approach to footnotes / cross-references) • 2 appendix items In addition, PRO 5 is going to add each of the following components: • Criteria / Establishment of Needs / Goals / Objectives • Assessment (can be formative or summative) • Recommendation Understand that there will probably need to be some revision to the PRO 4 components as you build the Feasibility Study. For example, you will likely need to more explicitly identify Criteria / Needs / Objectives as you describe some of the solutions / case studies / benchmarks, and you also might need to modify some of the wording in your solutions to remain more objective. Other areas to focus revision might be in research quality, weak verb elimination, and in identifying case studies / benchmarks to better fit the guidelines. 2 Evaluation Criteria (AKA “What I’m looking for”) At this point you should be aware of the criteria for solid and effective writing, research, style, and page design. This paper should demonstrate cumulative knowledge and application from course material. This is also a good opportunity to drill down on aspects of writing such as active / passive voice and sentence variety. PRO 5 Rubric – Feasibility Study Does your project meet the goals of the assignment (formatting, word count, research expectations, citations)? Is it on topic? Does PRO 5 correctly integrate needed additional elements (criteria, assessment, recommendation, etc.)? Does your project provide a sufficient title, table of contents? Clear headings and sub-headings? Does your project contain a clear introduction w/ quantifiable problem or opportunity? Does overall structure and organization of content decrease cognition time and increase understandability? Are benchmark sources used to support solutions? Is content development supported through “layering”? Is information paraphrased instead of directly quoted? Are footnotes or crossreferences used to identify sources (in place of parenthetical citations)? Does your project include at least 3 visuals? Do they support the paper rhetorically? Are they integrated correctly? Does your project include at least two appendix items? Are they integrated accurately? Does PRO 5 show evidence of stylistic revision from PRO 4? (i.e. weak verbs, prepositional phrase, noun stacks, choices in diction). Does PRO 5 address additional weaknesses identified in PRO 4 (i.e. weak benchmarks/case studies, weak visuals, etc.)? Is the writing free of errors? Is there sentence variety? Overall (5 categories) • A lot of this project is about editing. You now have time to edit at the sentence level (for conciseness), to think about word choice and sentence structure, and to develop your writing style.
