Working Conditions in The Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution has been portrayed as the greatest transformation to human life in history, where agrarian and handcraft methods were replaced with machines. The Industrial Revolution transformed the production of goods into machine manufacturing and transformed the work patterns and conditions of mankind. There are many positives that can be deduced from the era of the industrial revolution, notably the improved quality of life and wealth creation (Koc & Teker, 2019). However, the quality of life and wealth creation was only for a few, as the industrial revolution also marked an era where the wealth gap widened and the quality of life for most was played down due to the poor working conditions, as observed with the testimonies presented to the Saddler Commission. Despite the compelling evidence of poor working conditions, the witnesses still provided varied opination on the conditions in the industrial revolution.
From the testimonies, one can easily deduce that the working conditions during the industrial revolution were appalling. Not only did the factory owners use child labor, with children as young as six years olds, but also the children were subjected to strenuous working hours that were as long as 16 hours in a day (Sadler Commission). In addition, the children had little time for meal breaks, and even the meals were not pleasing due to the discomfort of working in a condition that could hardly inspire any appetite (Sadler Commission).
