1 How and why did the US and the Soviet Union become enemies after World War II? What was American policy toward the Soviet Union during the Cold War? Please provide three examples showing how the policy was applied to Europe.
The US and the Soviet Union were never the best of friends before and during the Second World War. The Office of the Historian reports that “relations between the Soviet Union and the United States had been strained in the years before the World War II.” There were clear signs that the two had different agenda’s for the world. Aside from the different agendas, the two also saw themselves as the superpowers of the world and with neither willing to cede power to the other, misunderstandings were imminent.
The American policy toward the Soviet Union during the Cold War is commonly known as the Cold War foreign policy and its main purposes was to make sure that communism’s speed of penetration in the world was lowered. A good example of how this policy was applied is Germany which was divided into two sections (West Germany – pro-capitalist and East Germany – pro-communism). Other examples include Hungary and Czechoslovakia where the US tried but failed to exert their influence. The US tried to create the same division as it had done in Germany but failed.
