Before the end of reconstruction, the period was characterized attempts to end slavery which was widely practiced but highly questioned by organizations such as the church. It was meant to address the inequities of slavery and its social, economic, and political impact.
Bartolome De Las Casas
Bartolome was born in Seville and was a descendant of a family who had migrated from France. His family was ancient Christians who founded the Christian Seville. He was also a land and slave owner. However, he expressed his view on the rights of indigenous people and slavery. He was an important figure in championing for disadvantaged people’s rights (Colonization and Revolution, 1815). He pleaded with the Spanish government against enslavement and forceful invasion. He initially supported the use of African slaves instead of indigenous Americans because the African slaves were more tolerant to diseases thus, they had higher survival rates. He later advocated for abolishing all slavery, but the empire was reluctant due to the power and wealth on stake. Las Casa’s idea of self-governance for indigenous people was granted, and these people were allowed to adjudicate in their matters. Las Casas advocated for the creation of a position of a “protector” who would articulate the issues of the indigenous people as long as they aligned with catholic beliefs and were not heretical. He was appointed the first protector and continued with the anti-slavery efforts till his death.
