Oppression refers to unjust treatment or cruel exercise of authority. One form of oppression is slavery. The history of African slavery dates back to 1619 when a Portuguese slave ship traveled across the Atlantic Ocean with captive Africans from Angola (Lovejoy, 2011). Throughout the seventeenth century, slavery spread in Europe as white settlers in North America turned to enslaved Africans for cheap labor (Lovejoy, 2011). During this time, African slaves worked mainly in European settlers' plantations (Lovejoy, 2011).
