Martha’s Table is a non-profit organization whose main aim is to help reduce poverty in the poor areas of Washington DC. Throughout the years it has helped in the fight against poverty in urban areas by increasing access to healthy foods for children and their family to enjoy. One of their main projects, where I was able to work closely with, is called ‘Joyful Food Markets.’ It was during this project where I was able to learn about how business practices relate to more significant societal issues around us and develop the character and mindset needed to become a business professional.
Although the organization has several different projects focusing in different areas of the community within the place, the ‘Joyful Food Markets’ program, focuses on reducing poverty and malnutrition on areas east of Anacostia River. It is around this place where people could find a great deal of poverty and malnutrition brought about by several factors such as lack of access to jobs, prices of fruits and vegetables, and even knowledge of parents about the utmost need to eat healthily. During my time volunteering for this program, I helped distribute the food and other provisions to the families and their children. Being here has helped me realized how serious this problem is, as many of the children are obese and are experiencing some kinds of illnesses brought about by improper nutrition. Accordingly, this problem has been reduced little by little thanks to the program and the dedication of its members in helping this segment of the population.
