Hollywood is one of the biggest entertainment and glamour industries in the world. Every year, hundreds to thousands of Hollywood movies are made and released; some of them do great business, and the others fail at the box office. Similarly, some of the Hollywood actors and actresses as well as filmmakers rule the hearts of Hollywood fans and the others are pushed behind the competition. Just like people working in the fashion industry, Hollywood celebrities face various problems and are often challenged in their workplace; the two most prominent problems are inequality and bias. Producers and directors love choosing actors and actresses for their new projects who have had given plenty of successful films during their career. However, when it comes to paying them handsomely, we have observed gender discrimination.
The gender pay gap is systemic, worldwide injustice, and it is very unfortunate to say that Hollywood is no exception. Compared to male celebrities, female stars are not paid well for their hard work, dedication, and contribution to this industry. According to a report published by Forbes, the top ten Hollywood actresses in 2018 received 40 percent lesser than their male counterparts. Together, these actresses were able to bring in a salary of $185 million, and the top ten Hollywood actors received up to $745 million within a year. For instance, Scarlett Johansson made nearly $197 million in 2018, which was lesser than what George Clooney made the same year. George Clooney became the top and highest paid actor of 2018, who made $238 million in a year.
Another example of Hollywood’s gender pay gap is that of Michelle Williams, who received eight times lesser than Mark Wahlberg for All the Money in the World and nearly 14,00 times less for all reshoots. In All the Money in the World, Michelle Williams played the character of Gail, the mother of a kidnapped child. On the other hand, Mark Wahlberg played the role of her father’s advisor. Statistics have revealed that Mark’s salary for this project was $5 million and Michelle received $625,000.
