When you first switch on your television and begin to sift through the channels, you may find yourself watching two men hitting a yellow ball with a racket out of boredom. The game is known as tennis, and in the modern era, tennis is a highly concrete sport thanks to various associations that uphold the game's culture and rules. The only people who played the sport in the past were royalty and a few commoners, but today it is played all over the world, with an annual tournament. Although the popularity of this sport has fluctuated throughout the years, it is presently supported by an extensive global fan base. In this essay, the author will examine tennis's historical development and the key events that shaped the sport into what it is now.
Tennis has a very long history, beginning in the 12th century, primarily in France. The game's original name was "jeu de paume," or "game of palm," because it was initially played with bare hands until substantial rule changes were made. The original athletes in this sport are rumored to have been royals and some commoners; the playing field was considerably different from what we often see today; most games were played in enclosed spaces instead of the open fields that we see on sports TV (Morys George Lyndhurst Bruce, 2022). Major Walter C. Wingfield invented a famous tennis racket because playing by hand on the first day would be highly unpleasant in the long run. The first racket was made of wood, which was less durable than the current racket that tennis professionals use today. (Gandu, 2012).
