Slavery in Ghana
Ghana is the chosen country for the assignment. The nation is a British colony. Ghana gained Independence on 6th March 1957 after nearly two decades of colonization and vulnerability to the slave trade activities typical on the African continent’s west coast, which British slavery’s center (Kriger, 2019). Specifically, the act of obtaining indigenous enslaved people from Ghana and transporting them to Europe lasted between the 16th century and the 19th century. During the era, traders from the Western country flocked to Ghana with various manufactured commodities to engage in barter trades whereby, in most cases, people were traded as enslaved people. Individuals who were sold successfully had no choice but to accept shifting from their native country and settle in a foreign world where they provided cheap labor contributing to the development of the foreign nation. However, signs of slavery ending began in 1807 when the British passed legislation restricting slave trade activities (Oldfield, 2021). Despite more demand for slave trade and profits, the laws, coupled with increased efforts to eradicate the menace, proved to work perfectly.
           Slave trade and colonization activities posed long-term effects on Ghana and the entire African continent. Most importantly, economic incentives to collaborate in the trading activities created an enabling environment for violence and lawlessness, which significantly motivated the trade. Split family-based relationships, continued captivity fear, and depopulation contributed to nearly a lack of positive agricultural and economic progress in the part of West Africa (Nunn, 2017). Individuals who associated with the slave trade utilized a productive part of the population, thus depriving Ghana of energetic persons who would actively participate in developing their country. Specifically, young men and women formed the massive percentage of persons held captive and moved to Britain almost in their motherhood stage. Therefore, European slave traders left behind populations comprising of disabled, aging, or dependent individuals who would hardly imply considerable development in their country or societies.
           Even though the Britain government contributed to the abolishment of the slave trade many years ago, the country still faces short and long-term slavery effects because the activity ran for a longer period, which constituted nearly two decades. Many people recognize Ghana’s economy as recording significant development over the recent years. However, the country is yet to get over the effects caused by the slave trade, primarily in Ghana’s rural regions. For example, research findings reveal that most human populations inhabiting the rural parts still lack essential social amenities such as water and electricity. The existing situations in the underdeveloped areas nearly resemble the middle age era. Secondly, the slave trade activities altogether resulted in depopulation in Ghana, among other African states.
