You are to write a one page critique on the Presidency of Thomas Jefferson, in
comparison to that of George Washington. In comparing the two Presidents you
must point out the shortcomings and hard times brought on during the Presidency
of Jefferson and the positives of the Presidencies of Washington. What were the
lasting impacts of Washington’s Presidency? What of Jefferson’s Presidency? Be
sure to discuss their character, decision making processes, important events during
their terms and overall impact on the nation.
Suggestions: Remember you are writing as an analyst, you are not simply restating
events or giving an account of what has happened. You are giving an opinion and
attempting to convince others of your position. You must be specific and call on
specific events and accounts. Take into account:

Introduction
Historians have written much about the personal loathing and a dissenting vision for Americans that existed between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of America’s Declaration of Independence and an idealistic visionary leader (Cornwell 2009). However, a similar relationship between Jefferson and George Washington, the founding father of the United States thorough his political leadership and pragmatic military, has attracted little attention among historical writers. Both presidents contributed to building America as seen today, and it might be challenging to declare one as more influential than the other. Nevertheless, the early existence of the United States can be credited to Washington, perhaps not because of his military accomplishments, but his way of leadership (Cornwell 2009). This paper is a critique on the presidency of Thomas Jefferson in comparison to Washington leadership with an emphasis on the shortcomings and hard times witnessed by Jefferson’s presidency and the positive and lasting impacts of Washington’s presidency. In drawing this comparison, the paper accounts for their differing legacies by examining their character, decision-making processes, important events during their terms and their overall impact on the country.
Jefferson often opposed Washington’s political decisions and appeared as an opponent whenever critical decisions were made. The two leaders were in isolation following the Revolutionary War. As Washington trained, fed, and stayed with the army during the war, and eventually defeated the enemies, Jefferson was serving as the Governor of Virginia (Cornwell 2009).
