1. Choose any one of the works/authors of the Age of Reason/Revolutionary period studied in this course and write a literary analysis of the chosen work. The focus of the essay should be three-fold: to discuss the theme of the author/work, the major characteristics of the period that are evident in the work, and major narrative devices the author uses to communicate his or her message. Your essay must have a clearly-defined thesis statement, well-developed paragraph(s), and fitting conclusion. In your thesis, assert how the author uses narrative devices to convey the theme of the work and how the theme or narrative devices demonstrate major characteristics of the period. Include direct quotes from the primary sources for analysis and support.

The Age of Reason/Revolutionary Period
Thomas Paine was a renowned writer, political theorist, philosopher, revolutionary, and political activist born in 1737. He was an influential revolutionary whose ideas emphasized human rights during the Enlightenment Era. Paine was the author of influential pamphlets that were compiled to form the Age of Reason. The paper focuses on Paine’s The Age of Reason which uses various narrative devices, such as first-person narration and repetition, to pass a significant message to the reader. The primary characteristics of the Revolutionary Period were independent thinking and sharing of ideas, the pursuit of knowledge, and human happiness.  
The primary theme of The Age of Reason is the rational approach to divinity and God. Paine significantly discourages people from blindly following well-organized religions, churches, and their texts. He urges believers to rely on their experience in understanding God and observation.
