On September 17, 1859, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech at Cincinnati. One of the most notable quotes of the address was, “I do not mean to say that this government is charged with the duty of redressing or preventing all the wrongs in the world; but I do think that it is charged with the duty of preventing and redressing all wrongs which are wrongs to itself.” (The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, 2017). From the outset, it would be prudent to note that Lincoln's assertions regarding one of the most fundamental purposes of the government are valid. According to the American Government (2022), one critical mandate of the government is to create rules that protect people from conflicts and provide law and order. (American Government, 2022). This certainly resonates with Lincoln's argument that any self-respecting government should endeavor to prevent wrongs of whatever nature from happening.
