Gettysburg Speech
On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech on Cemetery Hill in the National Soldier Cemetery in Gettysburg. The occasion was to pay tribute to fallen soldiers who had died so that the United States could live (National Geographic par. 5). As such, the audience must have substantially consisted of the relatives and friends of the fallen soldiers. Also, the audience must have included military and political leaders of all spheres. The speech centrally focused on liberty and equality among all Americans. Since he delivered the speech against the backdrop of a grueling war, he was implicitly challenging his audience and America as a whole to uphold the core principles the founding fathers had in mind when founding the nation.
