Historians have characterized progressives as white working-class urban rather than rural residents who supported the change and had an influence on politics mainly in the 1990s. According to historians of the 1950s and 1960s, progressives were white middle-class individuals who desired change in the wake of the terrible consequences of the Industrial Revolution, which fueled the emergence of new world-changing technologies that we have today. The progressives, who had just one objective: to change society so that it was suitable for everyone, are defined by historians today using a combination of these concepts (Keller, 1916).
