The debate on whether the US was justified in dropping the two atomic bombs on Japan has been ongoing for years. President Truman ordered the first bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima, and it killed more than 140,000 people. On the 9th of August 1945, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima, a second bomb 2was dropped on Nagasaki, killing more than 50,000 people (Smith, 2020). President Truman was wrong when he decided to bomb Nagasaki and Hiroshima because there were other more viable options.
When Truman learned that the Manhattan Project was successful, he knew that he had a difficult decisio0n to make as he was the only person capable of ending the conflict between the United States and Japan. US civilians and soldiers were getting tired of the war, but the Japanese military was unwilling to quit. Although the United States had succeeded in invading some Japanese cities, the Japanese army remained strong, with more than 2 million soldiers guarding other cities against US advancement (Smith, 2020). Truman’s dilemma on whether or not to bomb Japan was the most difficult in his entire life.
Allied forces demanded an unconditional surrender of the Japanese government. Even though the demand indicated that if Japan refused to surrender, it would be totally destroyed, there was no mention of the use of any weapons of mass destruction.
