Ellison's novel focuses on the narration of a Southern African American about his life in the city. His story revolves around his life living as an 'invisible' individual within an invisible space within a city dominated by wealthy white individuals who have always looked down upon them. Accordingly, the story proceeds with the narrator's indoctrination with "The Brotherhood" and his subsequent rise through its ranks. This organization was composed primarily of African Americans hoping not only for a better Harlem but also for a better world for everyone. However, chaos would later ensue, thereby making The Brotherhood's aims, influence, and aspirations falter. Nonetheless, the story ends with the narrator being mixed up with looters and becoming trapped in a coal bin.
