The Missouri Compromise came at a time when the nation was right in the midst of slavery. Nation building had been stretched due to the divergent opinions by the various states around the hot issue of slavery. The states that supported slavery were quite adamant that they would rather enjoy autonomy if the institution of slavery would be touched on. The other states that did not support slavery on the other hand, wanted a unified nation that did the same too. This called for a round of talks and discussions geared towards finding an ultimate compromise for both sides of the divide, eventually resulting in the Missouri Compromise.
The Missouri compromise was passed in 1820 and its goal was to establish a balance between those states that supported slavery against those that did not. With its passage, it was now clear that the country was perfectly divided into two based on the issue of slavery. Now there were Free states and slave states. When Missouri was admitted as an additional member of the slave states, it shifted the balance in favor of the slave states with one more. However, the addition of Maine as a free state balanced off the equation once more. The impact of the compromise on slavery is that it created a buffer at latitude 36 degrees 30, upon which slavery would be forbidden northwards (U.S. History, n.d.). South of that latitude was left for slave states. Technically it helped created a land of freed slaves northwards.
