For a long time, major cities have been located near water bodies due to several reasons. Some of these reasons include commercial purposes due to the ease of transportation of bulk commodities and sustainability. However, many major cities have emerged at the coast due to factors which include urban revival, the industrial revolution and during the age of Mercantilism and Empire. This essay discusses how many major coastal cities emerged due to the three factors citing an example for each.
The widening inequality gap resulted in the emergence of slums. It happens that the population of the negative extreme of the inequality ladder is the highest. The poor live near the rich to work for them. Since the wages are not good enough to cater for them modern housing, they end up living in poor conditions leading to the buildup of slums. There are some countries or cities, however, that have tried building a bridge over the issue. South Korea for instance, built a bridge by promoting the existence of another social class; the middle class. This was due to the expansion of consumer demand and income and extensive labor movement which transformed into very high wages (Mike, 2003). The existence of middle class led to the clearing, rebuilding and redeveloping the existing urban slums. The urban slums were replaced with apartment houses and office buildings. A good example of such a town is Cheonggyecheon which is a few kilometers from Seoul.
