Introduction
Technology is ever changing. Great advancements and improvements are being made by humankind, on almost a daily basis. Nowadays, there is virtually a better and more efficient way of doing literally everything. Increased automation and mechanization in most processes has brought with it increased need for advanced technological understanding. It is this increased need for automation that has brought the rise in robotics. Nowadays, robots have become part and parcel of the operations of most companies, especially in the manufacturing and production sector. With an increase in its application came a subsequent increase in other related issues, from its acclaim to quite inevitably, its criticism.
The concept of robotics is one of the most discussed topics in the world. Other people view robots as machines that make work easier while others dispute the existence of robots claiming they are a threat to human beings. However, with the current development in technology, the discussion about robots will not be coming to an end any time soon. Simple robots are used in homes to perform various tasks like washing dishes, while complex ones are used mostly by the military and in the manufacturing industry. This research paper, seeks to analyze the effect of technological development on the use of robots in normal life, and whether robots will have their own thoughts in future.
Background of the study
The development of robots dates back to ancient legends such as Pygmalion, whose statue came back to life and Cadmus, who turned dragon teeth into soldiers. In the 4th Century, more developments about robots were made. It is in this period that Archytas of Greece, made a mechanical bird which was propelled by steam. Many more developments took place, including one that allegedly could speak. However, the first design of a humanoid robot was made by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1945. Leonardo’s robot was the first cognitive robotic work that tried to replicate human and animal behaviors, (Chopra, 2014).
Industrial Revolution and the introduction of electricity, initiated the modern concept of robots. At the start of the Industrial revolution, much of the work was done through human labor, from the processing of raw materials to the ultimate production of the finished products. This was somehow too labor intensive and expensive when it came to wages. The first modern robot was used in a manufacturing firm as an industrial robot, hence, manufacturing companies incurred lower costs. Robots and drones offer potential savings in the long-term, (Springer, 2013). Artificial intelligence and digitally controlled robots were built from 2000. The successful extensive development of robots, clearly indicate they are useful in normal life. Nonetheless, whether robots can have their own thoughts in the future is an issue that is still in contention.
Analysis
The International Federation of Robotics defines a robot as a machine programmed by a computer, and capable of performing a series of complex tasks automatically. The analysis fully agrees with this definition, as it is evident that robots perform various tasks. Manufacturing and other industries have been tr...
