Lewis and Clark Expedition
The Lewis and Clark expedition was essential to the American people and American president Thomas Jefferson as it generated a route across the western continent for commercial purposes. Jefferson strongly believed that the future of the citizens’ prosperity would be the extension of Yeoman farmers to the West. The expedition started in May 1804 with fifty Americans led by Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and an army officer journeying northwest along the Missouri River (UShistory.org, 2022). The team was to note the geography of the area and resources available in addition to influencing the people to establish America's culture and initiate a commercial and diplomatic relationship through trading. Furthermore, it aimed at minimizing the British control over the profitable Indian fur business. During winter, the team camped in Manda villages which were trading centers (UShistory.org, 2022). Resultantly, this led to the success of the expedition.
The expedition was a positive endeavor and achieved its goal of improving America's cultural life. The expedition led to interactions and strong relationships with the native American tribes. Ultimately, resulting in the establishment of a favorable business environment, furthermore reducing the widespread influence of the British in the fur trade of the continental interior. Frenchmen in Manda village taught the Americans mapping and navigation skills that helped to design accurate maps and routes for the fur business (UShistory.org, 2022). Additionally, the routes aided numerous Americans in traveling and settling in fertile Oregon. Resultantly, the population exceeded that of the British, and to avoid war, Americans claimed the Oregon territory via a signed treaty.
