Jacob Lawrence is a well-recognized and significant African American painter in the history of American art. His artistic paintings were directly triggered by the cultural and intellectual ideas from the Harlem Renaissance. This cultural movement nurtured arts, poetry, drama, and music as tools of articulating and substantiating the African-American understanding and experience. Lawrence commenced his artistic paintings in the late 1930s. These paintings focused on the African American culture and heritage. Lawrence is recognized for creative series that depict African American culture, traditions, history, and great leaders.
Lawrence used African American traditions and culture as the primary subject matter to come up with his paintings. Between 1940 and 1950, Lawrence described Harlem concepts that focused on workers and expressed their strength of purpose in bold colors and simplified solid designs. He had achieved significant stature in the art sector (Masi, 2018). In 1936, Lawrence worked as an easel painter at the Work Progress Administration. In his position, he came up with a series of forty-one artistic paintings that depicted the life of general Toussaint L'Ouverture (1743-1803). Additionally, Lawrence was a retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and acquired a position at Pratt Institute. During these moments, Lawrence painted narratives about the struggle for justice and fairness as he majored in civil rights themes.
The voting artwork idea got into Lawrence in 1941. During this time, he produced a sixty-panel series that he named The Migration of the Negro.
