According to O’Brien and Parsons (1995), the effects of World War II to any country that participated remained in their memories for years influenced their behaviour and changed their way of life. Companies came up, rhythms of life altered as countries strategized their way forward after the war ended. For proper explanations, this essay explains the effects of the World War II on American society, specifically focusing its argument on the suburbanization, the motor industry, gender, culture and consumer industry, with an expansion into the racial spheres as well.
The GI Bill was introduced to award soldier returning from World War II with low and affordable mortgages. Most thought of buying or building houses in the suburbs other than the expensive cities. With the number of people buying houses concentrating in the suburbs, new urban centers sprawled, leading to suburban areas (Böhme & Stehr, 2012). Later, this turned to be suburbanization. In connection to this was the urban-to-suburban migration by the whites, who knew minorities would not easily settle in such areas. With consumer trends changing in both urban and suburban centers, the government thought of a better way of connecting the two sections of the society and settled on the development of roads and rails into the unreached rural areas. The result of these was the change in consumerism and automobile development.
According to the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, CPB, (n.d), the American government, in a bid to improve lifestyles of all citizens, made it easy for middle and low-income earners to buy items like cars and TVs cheaply. TVs were useful due to the increasing preference for locally produced programs like Honeymooners and Goldbergs.
