Ho Chi Minh was a Vietnamese nationalist hero who led the Vietnamese proclamation for independence nearly half a decade ago through a powerful speech to the world. In the speech, Minh demanded that the free world supports its independence as compensation for the services the Vietnamese offered during the Second World War. The services Minh was referring to in the speech refer to the assistance the allied nations received from the Vietnamese in their fight against the Axis nations. The Vietnamese, under the nationalist organization known as the League for the Independence of Vietnam or the Viet Minh, actively resisted the occupation of the Japanese thereby aiding the United States war efforts against Japan. Additionally, Ho Chi Minh, after his release from China, returned to Vietnam from where he provided the Allied forces with information on the movement of Japanese troops.
In the speech, Minh also claimed that the independence of Vietnam was consistent with the philosophical principles which the allied nations had claimed were paramount during the Second World War. The principles Ho Chi Minh is referring to are self-determination and equality. He also makes references to when these principles were reasserted such as during the post-war peace conferences held in Tehran and San Francisco that expressed a belief system that supported the independence of Vietnam. Minh also used justified the Vietnamese independence by arguing that Vietnam deserved to be free from the French for the same reasons the allied forces challenged the axis powers.
