Foreign policy, also known as foreign affairs are strategies developed by a country to achieve goals within its international relations setting and protect its national interests. The United States has a long history of relations with other countries, including the changes that ensued after the War of 1812. This paper seeks to assess the American foreign policy between 1790 and 1820 to find out the most exceptional changes that occurred.
The war of 1812 is one of the major events that shaped America’s foreign policies. It started after a sequence of economic sanctions by the French and the British against the United States (Gilje, 2017). In retaliation, the United States set various embargoes against the British, but the embargoes even crippled the United States economy more than they did Britain. This angered the citizens and in 1812, Congress declared War on the British, and this transformed the country’s foreign policies.
