Shinto refers to one of the ancient Japanese religious beliefs. The Japanese religion is characteristic of elements of both animism and shamanism. The religion comprises different sects spread across the disintegrated islands of Japan, with each having unique objects of worship known as kami. The object of worship, kami, had to have superior qualities and included both exquisite and mysterious natural features and social members with perceived superior human qualities such as emperors. Nara Buddhism, on the other hand, refers to the Buddhist religious ideologies introduced during the Nara period in Japan that later gained influence among the Japanese to the point of threatening the indigenous Shinto religious beliefs.
