Kobani is a city in Northern Syria that has been under the Kurdish control since 2012. The Kurdish YPG militia took control of the city in 2012 as a consequence of the Civil war that broke out in Syria (Keating, 2014). The Ismail State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attempted to take over the city Kurdish militia from September 2014 to January 2015 putting the city under siege for the entire period. The majority of Kobani residents fled to Turkey because most of the city had been destroyed during the 2014 siege. It is estimated that over 200, 000 Kurdish refugees fled to Turkey because more than 100 Kurdish villages had been seized by the ISIL militants. (Keating, 2014). The ISIL militants kidnaped women and committed massacres. The Kurdish YPJ and YPG forces were able to defend the town of Kobani and quite a number of nearby settlements during the 2014 siege because the militants dis not manage to occupy the entire Canton (Dearden, 2015).
