There were various reasons why the British failed the Revolutionary War, partly because of poor planning and underestimating the patriot\s resolve to be independent. The British were not well prepared to fight the colonies as they put few financial resources and workforce to fight. They also naively believed that the war would end quickly and they would win decisively. However, they lacked a logical aim for waging war against the colonies, and there were no outside allies who supported them.
The Revolutionary War (1775- 1783), the American Revolution, or the US War of Independence pitted Great Britain against the Thirteen Colonies. The British adopted the Stamp Act in 1765 partly to fund the heavily indebted British government, and the act became one of the contentious issues (Foner, 2014). Americans wanted liberty, and people in the colonies opposed the measure, and the crisis worsened as there was resentment against Great Britain. Additionally, Britain's debt made it difficult to fund operations, and the royal ministry was forced to take shortcuts and reduce spending in some areas, but this issue also caused delays. The Seven Years War (1756–1763) between Britain and France increased Britain's debt considerably, and military presence in the colonies also drained resources (Foner, 2014). The British could not maintain a large army overseas, and the merchants were under threats of attack on the open seas as the British government did not offer support.
