At the turn of the century, it was a normal phenomenon for children to work. Extensive evidence shows that children as young as ten years old would be engaged in paid labor in the United States (Michael 2017). Children were considered the property of their parents. Therefore, their already meager pay would be managed by their parents in most cases. For African Americans, the challenges at the turn of the century included racial discrimination and poor pay.
The industrial revolution did not make the situation of child workers any better. It only expanded the areas in which their labor would be required. Children would work in cotton mills, mines, factories, farms, and other avenues brought about by the industrial revolution.
