In an essay format answer one of the questions found below:
1. Analyze, compare, and contrast the developments in Russia, Austria, and Turkey during the 19th century – 1914.
2. What role did nationalism, imperialism, and colonialism play in the nation- and state-building processes during the 19th century – 1914?
3. Describe the European alliance systems before World War I. Explain what led to the outbreak of the so-called “Great War” and what its main consequences were.
4. Analyze, compare, and contrast the society, economy, and politics in China and Japan with those in Latin America during the 19th century – 1914.
5. How did the Industrial Revolution influence economy, society, internal policies, and international relations during the 19th century – 1914?
6. Analyze, compare, and contrast the French Revolution of 1789 with the Russian Revolution of 1917.
 Expectations: good knowledge of class readings (textbook and primary sources) and lecture materials; strong thesis statement (type it in bold text); two research questions (type them in bold text), thoughtful and compelling argumentation; factual accuracy; accurate writing; ability to synthesize; comprehensive conclusion. Offer your interpretation.
 Your thesis statement will make an argument, not state a fact.  Your research questions should define the focus of your essay, be clear and concise. Please consult “Writing a History Paper.  Your answer should draw on the required readings and lecture materials. In addition to these sources, you should rely on at least one monograph and at least two scholarly articles. Your answer should use three primary sources, either from those listed on your reading list or those you will identify in the web-links indicated below.

The Great War
Causes of the Great War
The Great War was started within the summer of 1914 immediately after Archduke Franz Ferdinand had been assassinated. The Great War went on for more than four years and ended in 1918. More than 20 million army men were killed, and about 21 million were wounded. The losses can be attributed to the number of nations that participated in and trench warfare. As much as the killing of Archduke Ferdinand was the leading cause of the Great War, other factors played a part in the war. Research questions to be asked are: What factors led to the outbreak of the Great War? What were the consequences of the Great War?
Mutual Defense Alliances
Nations all over the world came up with mutual agreements of defense with those that bordered them and signed treaties that would bring about battles. The treaties meant that if a particular nation is attacked, the allied nations rose up in defense of the nation that was attacked. Some alliances were in existence, as seen below.
Japan and Britain
France and Russia
Russia and Serbia
Germany and Austria-Hungary
Britain and France and Belgium
A good case of defense was witnessed when Austria-Hungary declared war upon Serbia and Russia rose in defense of Serbia. Germany saw what was happening as Russia was getting ready and decided to attack Russia. At the same time, France was drawn in against Austria-Hungary and Germany. Germany went head-on with France through marching over Belgium as it took Britain into war. Japan then got into war. Imperialism
Imperialism is defined as the circumstance in which a nation adds the power that it has plus wealth by bringing territories to be in their control. Before the Great War started, many European countries had been involved in the fight for imperialistic claims in Asia and Africa, which was a point of contention. As a result of raw materials found in the nations that were being fought for, tensions went up as nations fought to have rights to raw materials. The desire and the increasing competition to have big empires brought about the Great War as countries wanted to be powerful than others.
Militarism
As the 20th century approached, there was an arms race that began. The arms race was exhibited by the number of warships owned by a country, as well as the size of the armies. Young men were mobilized by states to be prepared for battle. There was an increase in the number of warships, the number of guns went up, and at the same time, the nature and quality of armor went up starting with HMS Dreadnought of Britain in 1906. However, with time, the Drought ought became outclassed with the launch of the Royal Navy together with Kaiserliche marine, which expanded their ranks with powerful warships and which were modern.
