Foundational movement skills that children
Foundational movement skills are critical for children at an early age since they represent the building blocks for their movements. Without these skills, children are likely to experience problems maintaining balance and control of their bodies, which further affects their ability to learn in the classroom. Lack of active lifestyles at an early age, thus affects young children's ability to develop these skills, which are important in their development process.
Firstly, body control is an aspect of the foundational movement skills in which the child can balance his/her body when standing or in movement. These skills further complement the other skills required for appropriate development since the child can stand, walk, or run to participate. Body control skills include balancing on one leg to gauge the balance that a child can maintain over a sustained period. Furthermore, other skills include jumping, twisting, turning, and rotating, which also help the child develop body control by moving in a fixed position. Apart from that, locomotor skills enable the child to move his/her body from one position to another. It provides the building blocks for the child to enhance their coordination skills. Locomotor skills include running, walking, skipping and hopping that include movement over set distances. Lastly, object control or manipulation includes activities that involve the control of toys or objects with both their hands and feet. These activities include throwing and catching of balls, kicking and dribbling footballs or bouncing. The above skills combined enable children to develop these skills that can propel their development to a higher level required in their growth stages.
Benefits of movement exploration programs
Increased movement exploration programs in infants and babies help develop skills that will further help them grow and develop into healthier individuals. These programs help develop good habits among children by reducing sedentary activities and encouraging activities that build up active lifestyles. The programs further help young children develop mentally and physically as they progress from childhood to become active teenagers. Therefore, the aim of such programs lies in their ability to transform their lives by introducing healthy habits.
