Introduction
The quality of healthcare in the United States is determined by the cost since improvement efforts to ensure better patient outcomes incurs high expenditures. However, the relationship between cost and quality health care remains inconsistent as it depends on the kind of spending that is more effective on improving the quality and the kind of spending that is wasteful. Improving care quality leads to an increase in costs although they could lead to lowering of costs through the reduction of complications and hospital readmissions. The public and private agencies face increasing pressure to lower the cost of healthcare and at the same time increase the quality of healthcare. The provision of affordable and quality health services poses a major challenge as a result of the intricacies of health care systems and services. The quality and cost of health care services remain the key indicators to the government, health care providers, insurance agencies and patients in making decisions regarding matters pertaining to health care (RAND Corporation, 2013).
The Roles and Activities of Public and Private Agencies in Addressing Cost and Quality in Health Care
The public and private agencies play a critical role in addressing cost and quality of health care. However, in order to achieve high quality services at without increasing the cost, they undertake various activities meant to improve services provided. The private arm of the health care industry is often efficient, accountable and sustainable compared to the public sector, which provides more impartial and evidence-based care. The public and private sectors are engaged in the formulation of various efforts to improve quality of services and management of the cost of health care. An effective health care system should have concerted efforts of a multifaceted network of people and organizations in the public and private sector (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2014).
Various public and private agencies play different roles and undertake various activities meant to address cost and quality of health care. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is a public agency, which is an arm of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services mandated to research about health services. The agency is mandated to research and formulate policies that will improve the quality of care, minimize the costs, improve the safety of the patient, minimize medical errors and broaden access to vital medical services.
