The article by Rushton, Schoonover-Shoffner, and Kennedy (2017) explores some of the practices and strategies that individuals and institutions can use to limit the negative effects of moral distress and to build moral resilience. A symposium that was attended by 45 nurses, ethicists, researchers, and other stakeholders was held. The article reveals that moral distress, which occurs when “ the person is aware of a moral problem, acknowledges moral responsibility, and makes a moral judgment about the correct action; yet, as a result of real or perceives constraints, participates in perceived moral wrongdoing,” is prevalent in the healthcare industry. As a result of moral distress, cases of burnout, lack of job satisfaction and empathy, low quality of care, poor patient outcomes, and poor staff retention have become rampant in healthcare. Also, the article reveals that while moral distress has been an issue of concern for decades, very few solutions have been identified to mitigate its negative effects. However, Rushton, Schoonover-Shoffner, and Kennedy (2017) indicate that one way of dealing with moral distress is to build moral resilience. Moral resilience is an individual’s ability to restore their integrity when dealing with morally complex issues. Thus, the symposium examined ways in which individuals can build moral resilience and how organizations can create an enabling environment for building moral resilience.
