7. Importance of physical activity in venous return/what is venous stasis?
Research:
All medical professionals can agree that physical activity is beneficial for the body. One of those benefits is the increase of venous return. When one is exercising, the heart beats faster and harder, increasing cardiac output and blood pressure. Blood flow increases as vessels dilate. The respiratory rate and depth of breathing also increases, which enhances the action of the thoracic pump (Saladin, 2020). Muscle contractions increase venous return by means of the skeletal muscle pump. The muscles require more blood to pass through them. This is able to happen due to the increased venous return that increases cardiac output (Saladin, 2020). The opposite of this is called venous pooling. Venous pooling occurs when a person is still and blood accumulates in the limbs because venous pressure is low. The low venous pressure is not high enough to override the weight of the blood and drive it upward.
Critical Thinking:
We all know that exercising is beneficial for the human body. I find it very interesting to read about specific ways that physical activity can help our bodies’ function. The textbook provided an example of what can happen when the body is still for a long time. I tried holding one hand below my waist and one above my head. After a minute or so, I put my hands together. Interestingly enough, the color of my hands changed. The one held up was pale while the one held down was red. This is because the blood drained out of the hand being held in the air, while the blood pooled in the hand being held down. If enough blood accumulates in the limbs, cardiac output may fall so low that one may become dizzy or experience syncope (Saladin, 2020). This is a good reminder to allow your body some movement, even when it is not always convenient. It can be as simple as tensing the calf muscles periodically to keep the skeletal muscle pump active.
