What does Human Trafficking entail?
Human trafficking is a commercial activity involving human beings as the prime goods for forced labor, sexual motives, and removal of body organs such as ova in females. The act is illegal since it has some negative consequences on the psychological, health, safety, and violation of the human rights of the victims. It can be done in both international contexts where it is practiced across global borders, and domestic level is conducted within the countries. The various causes of human trafficking can be categorized into socio-cultural dynamics, conflicts and war, resource depletion, political instability, technological advancement, and unstable parenthood, resulting in the neglect of children. There are different types of human trafficking, such as sex, compelled labor, child exploitation and abuse, debt bondage, and organ trafficking. Human trafficking has negative impacts on the victims who have witnessed such incidences in their lives (Hachey and Philippi, 2017). These consequences result from different perspectives such as physical health problems, psychological challenges, and disease transmission issues.
Why is this important for the nurses to know and understand?
Nurses must understand and know any incident and activity involving human trafficking because they are trained personnel and have the skills required by the affected victims. They assist the affected persons in identifying the health damages that human trafficking activities have caused to them. Nurses also advise victims by offering training and education on identifying signs of human traffickers and the appropriate measures to avoid such situations. Nurses also help encounter and provide medical care interventions to victims of human trafficking, leading to enhanced health outcomes and quality of life (Hachey and Philippi, 2017). Furthermore, nurses help in treating injured human trafficking victims.
