Introduction
Central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) are a common occurrence, especially among patients recuperating from surgeries. Devices such as the central venous catheters or simply CVCs, are usually very vital when it comes to accessing internal blood vessels, such as the major veins around the neck or on the periphery of the heart. They help in the medical care and treatment of the critically ill patients, as they facilitate medical procedures such as infusion of drugs or other forms of medication, sampling of the blood contents, as well as measurement of hemodynamics. The central line, or the tubes from these CVS however, can be in place not only for weeks, but even for months on end, thereby being chief contributors to infections (Chopra et.al. 2013).
Evaluation
Nursing care is a feedback undertaking. As a result, the effectiveness and efficiency of nursing care is usually dependent on its outcome and the processes that culminate in its results. The aim of an evaluation is usually to monitor the various ways in which the distinct step by step procedures are followed, so as to ascertain that all the due standards have been observed throughout the course of the process. An evaluation also measures the impact of the process itself. After the consideration of the program, there is going to be a pilot program that would be conducted for a period spanning 4 months, to ascertain the feasibility as well as the efficacy of the measures brought forward.
In the present case of CLABSI, the project aimed at preventing the infections amongst patients in the ICU. The proposal that was sent to the Director of the Unit had the solution as enforcing the use of Central Line bundle in addition to patient baths with Chlorhexidine bath cloths. Additionally, to ensure its proper implementation, the first step involved the enlightenment or education of the nursing staff on the proposed solution, through various media such as PowerPoint presentations and pamphlets. A data collection tool will be used to keep track of the progress on each patient, starting from the time they get out of surgery, to the entire duration of their stay in ICU.
During the auditing process, there are a number of questions that need to be addressed. For example;
* Are the nurses and other caregivers well informed on the proposed solution?
* Is the proposed solution acceptable by all the members of staff?
* Are there additional options that can be offered by the nursing staff when it comes to challenges and options to the proposed solution?
* Is there enough documentation, both past and present, to satisfactorily flank the proposed solution and offer a more conclusive assessment of each patient?
The data collection process during th...
