Electronic Health Records EHRs have significantly improved service delivery to patients. Gone are the days when medical practitioners hand wrote patient records or had to squeeze in time to type them on computers. The methods were time-consuming and were prone to errors which led crisis such as wrong and fatal diagnosis. EHR, data entry, and retrieval go hand in hand since the success of the record system depends on the efficiency of the two processes. The essay seeks to evaluate EHRs, efficient means of data entry and retrieval from the system, and why some are preferred by clinicians over others.
Data entry has been made efficient by software that allows doctors to handwrite, dictate, and type notes in the EHR system (Evans, 2016). Using an electronic pen doctor can handwrite while the software recognizes and keep the record the notes. The clinician can also speak as the system records or type when they have sufficient time. The most efficient and favored approach to data entry is the use of templates (Evans, 2016). Some templates have an empty data field for the clinician to fill while others collect data of the patient from electronic records and automatically update the required fields.
