As noted in the Learning Resources, systems theory provides a meaningful and beneficial means of examining challenges in health care organizations.
For this Assignment, you apply systems theory to the examination of a problem in health care organizations, in a department or a unit within a health care organization.
Review the Meyer article, “Nursing Services Delivery Theory: An Open System Approach,” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus especially on the information presented in Table 1 (p. 2831) and Figure 2 (p. 2833).
Reflect on any health care organization or one with which you are familiar. Within a particular department or unit in this organization, identify a problem the staff is encountering.
Using Table 1 in the Meyer article as a guide, analyze the department or unit, identifying inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback. Consider whether the problem you have selected relates to input, throughput, output, cycles of events, and/or negative feedback.
Think about how you could address the problem: Consider what a desired outcome would be, then formulate related goals and objectives, and translate those goals into policies and procedures.
Research professional standards that are pertinent to your identified problem.
Reflect on the organization’s mission statement and values. In addition, consider how addressing this problem would uphold the mission and values, while improving the organizational culture and climate.
Write a 3- to 5-page paper that addresses the following:
Describe a department or unit within a health care organization using systems theory terminology. Include a description of inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback.
Describe the problem you identified within the department or unit using an open- systems approach, and state where the problem exists using the systems theory model (input, throughput, output, cycles of events, or negative feedback).
Based on this information, explain how you would address the problem as follows:
Formulate a desired outcome.
Identify goals and objectives that would facilitate that outcome.
Translate those goals and objectives into policies and procedures for the department or unit.
Describe relevant professional standards.
Explain how your proposed resolution to the problem would uphold the organization’s mission and values and improve the culture and climate.

The NSDT (Nursing Services Delivery Theory) is derived from the conceptual model for health and nursing policies. This theory addresses the second aspect of phenomena in the above conceptual model through examining the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative practices for subsystems of nursing service delivery. NSDT uses the strategy of deriving a theory to give a theoretical comprehension of the characteristic of an organization, situate the duty of nurses in the organizational context as well as integrating the blueprint and organization of nursing work. NSDT helps to answer various questions including; what the nature of an organization entails, how the nursing services are produced by healthcare organizations as well as how the structure of management affect the delivery of nursing services (Meyer & O'Brien-Pallas, 2010). This paper is aimed at applying the Nursing Services Delivery Theory in the In-Patient Unit within Massachusetts General Hospital.
Many countries are experiencing the challenges of offering and sustaining quality nursing care due to the shortage of health care providers globally. To deal with this challenge, policy makers and decision makers have given much attention to interventions that focus on organizational performance and nursing practice environment. There is therefore a need to understand the associations between the goals and policies of human resource management, organizational structures, context, resources and outcomes of the services offered by nurses (Marquis & Huston, 2012).
Nursing Services Delivery Theory assumes that care is delivered by nurses who are clustered in work groups within a department or a program in a larger organization. For instant, Inpatients Units within a hospital are considered as production subsystems. Nurses working within a particular setup of unit transform the energy inputs in delivering nursing services hence yield outputs (Marquis & Huston, 2012). Imported inputs are made up of staff, care recipients, material, information and fiscal resources which are subsequently changed in a nursing production sub-system by means of the work performed its internal work conditions and its structure (Meyer & O'Brien-Pallas, 2010).
