In the United States of America (USA), 1 in every 5 prescriptions given by physicians is for off-label use. In particular, off-label prescription involves when a doctor gives a patient a drug that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved to treat distinctive health conditions. In other words, it involves using drugs to treat a disease that the medication is not approved to treat (Chapter 9). Under various circumstances, children should be prescribed drugs for off-label use, and the correct dosages need to be administered.
In most cases, pediatricians prescribe off-label drug use for children, which is recommended when the health condition at hand should be managed despite the lack of appropriate medication. Off-label drug use is acceptable since the doctor must determine the right choice and dosage of drug administered to children (Corny, Lebel, Bailey, & Bussieres, 2015). For instance, in the scenario at hand, an 8-year-old African American male arrives at the emergency room with his mother exhibiting symptoms of depression. After a physical exam, the physician administered Zoloft 25 mg orally daily. Four weeks later, the client returns for a clinic, and the doctor identifies no change. The physician increased the dose to 50 mg. In this case, when the pediatrician increased the dosage, the client started responding appropriately. As such, off-label use in the pediatrics population must be done with caution. A drug made to address a specific health condition might be effective in handling other related medical issues.
Off-label use and dosage should be made safer for children by taking them to the right doctors when they become sick. Specifically, pediatricians consider numerous things when prescribing the proper dosage for young people, such as weight, surface area, and age (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). In that light, one way to make off-label drugs used for children from infancy to adolescence is to seek pediatrician advice. Additionally, the medications allocated should have an optimum outcome for the health condition at hand.
