A school nurse plays a pivotal role in a school set to breach education and healthcare. It is important to note that a student's health has a direct impact on the academic performance. This means that a school nurse should be equipped with necessary practical skills that will enable him or her to exercise leadership, coordinate health care, and education and improve the quality of healthcare standards of the school. This paper summarizes the key practical skills a school nurse should be equipped with.
Primarily, a school should demonstrate attainment of goals and objectives in Epi-pen training, reducing school absenteeism that is occasioned by asthma and improve the healthcare results in children with diabetes (Diaz & Wyckoff, 2013). As a school nurse, one should be able to know how to administer epinephrine auto-injectors, as they are an integral emergency treatment for learners with food allergies, which are common with the learners. The school nurse should also be able to create an environment free from allergens that can inflict asthma such as dusty classes or grass pollen grains (Diaz & Wyckoff, 2013). The nurse is responsible for eliminating such risk factors to minimize the absenteeism of the learners with asthma problems. The nurse should also be equipped with skills for managing diabetes, which include diet management and monitoring the blood sugar levels for the patients as well as injecting insulin to regulate the levels of sugar in diabetic learners (Loschiavo, 2015).
