Outcome No. 5: Positive Health Outcomes
Positive health outcomes are achievable through the combination of compassionate and evidence-based practice. First, compassion is necessary to gain the patients’ trust and allow them to open up with the health provider. Then, diagnostics and therapeutic management of the patient requires a combination of experience and evidence-based regimens to ensure high-quality care.
An example of this was my female patient, who was five weeks pregnant at the time and was having vaginal discharge along with chronic and intermittent urinary tract infection. At present, she also has dysuria, increased urinary frequency, suprapubic pain, and low-grade fever. To gather more information, as the presentation can also be similar to a urinary tract infection secondary to a sexually transmitted infection (STI), I have asked consent from the patient and told her that I would ask questions that may seem quite uncomfortable and asked a female health provider with me. Then, I asked for her sexual history and found that she was monogamous with the last sexual contact four weeks ago.
According to Mayo Clinic (2021), urinalysis and urine culture must be done to investigate on the cells and specific bacteria in the urine. Empiric antibiotics and prevention techniques should follow this. I advised the patient to get treated together with her husband to prevent recurrent infections. After the results came out, the patient was positive for E. coli, and we ruled out the possibility of an STI. After a week of treatment, the patient expressed her gratitude and said that I helped relieve her stress and anxiety due to pregnancy-related infections. The patient even recommended being treated by me in our institution to her friends. This example is inspiring as compassion strengthens the patient-health provider relationship. The proper treatment could not have occurred if I had not based my treatment plan on the updated clinical practice guideline.
