Essay Instructions:

Health Promotion in Minority Populations

Select an ethnic minority group that is represented in the United States (American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander). Using health information available from Healthy People, the CDC, and other relevant government websites, analyze the health status for this group.
In a paper of 1,000-1,250 words, compare and contrast the health status of your selected minority group to the national average. Include the following:
Describe the ethnic minority group selected. Describe the current health status of this group. How do race and ethnicity influence health for this group?
What are the health disparities that exist for this group? What are the nutritional challenges for this group?
Discuss the barriers to health for this group resulting from culture, socioeconomics, education, and sociopolitical factors.
What health promotion activities are often practiced by this group?
Describe at least one approach using the three levels of health promotion prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) that is likely to be the most effective in a care plan given the unique needs of the minority group you have selected. Provide an explanation of why it might be the most effective choice.

Understanding the importance of holistic healthcare is crucial for every healthcare professional. It allows them to appreciate better how to provide considerate treatment based on the patient's physical, emotional, psychological, and even spiritual needs, among others. In this study, the author would like to focus on promoting healthcare in minority populations. Since different sectors of society have various needs, a nursing professional must be aware of these and tailor a treatment that would take these into consideration. In the succeeding sections of this article, the author would focus on describing the various circumstances faced by the group, the barriers that reduce access to proper healthcare, and some possible efforts that could reduce these difficulties. All in all, it is the author's belief that having an in-depth knowledge of the group's overall circumstances is essential for the provision of holistic and effective healthcare.
Description
The minority population that the author chose for this article is Asian Americans. Asian Americans include individuals with Asian origins, regardless of whether they were only naturalized in the United States or born in the state. According to a recent report provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2019), obesity rates for the Asian population aged 20 and above were around 14.2% and 16.0% for men and women, respectively. Additionally, the percentage of men and women aged 20 and above who take regular hypertension medications are 49.4% and 43.6%, respectively. Despite these high numbers, insurance coverages are low with adults, 18 to 64 years of age, at 7.2% only. Finally, a 2019 report from the Mortality Data of the National Vital Statistics System shows that the leading causes of mortality are stroke, heart disease, and cancer. These suggest a possible significant correlation between personal life circumstances (i.e., poverty) and lifestyle choices that must be given higher priority.
Race, Ethnicity, and Disparity in Healthcare
Race and ethnicity could serve as a significant influence on the overall health of Asian Americans. This is particularly the case for those who have only migrated to the United States during their adulthood since they have already acculturated to the norms of the place. For example, in one study done by Yang et al. (2020), the authors found out that Asian Americans have a lesser tendency to seek out mental health treatments due to their perception and possibility of stigmatization. This study also considers the possibility of other cultural and non-cultural factors such as understanding of mental illness relative to cultural norms, familial support, and even disparities in capability to finance treatment, among others. All in all, this study suggests that cultural barriers, when coupled with the non-cultural effects of one's daily life, reduces one's desire to seek mental healthcare treatment.
Another significant cultural and racial barrier for Asian Americans is language. This difficulty refers to the difficulty to comprehend and speak in the American language and the capability to express oneself in the same. In one...
