An Interview with the Chief of Infectious Disease at Kaiser Permanente’s North California
Health care organizations use different strategies to manage risks. To understand some of these strategies, I conducted an interview with the chief of infectious disease at Kaiser Permanente’s North California hospital. He explained that what has worked well for the hospital when managing risk is the high level of corporation and commitment displayed by the staffs. Medical personnel, especially those working in critical care units, have complied with the hand washing guidelines minimizing surgery related infections. However, one of the disadvantages of implementing risk management plans includes increased spending. Risk management programs require a considerable amount of funds to sustain the programs. With limited resources, important activities like staff training and risk assessment are limited hence affecting quality service delivery.
Challenges the Organization Faces In Controlling Infectious Disease
At Kaiser Foundation, diarrhea and pneumonia were noted as some of the common infections. The main challenge is how to develop effective strategies of empowering staffs to recognize and limit the chances of spreading the bacteria. Furthermore, many hospitals including Kaiser Foundation lacks the personnel and all the required resources to detect and avoid outbreaks (Fauci & Morens, 2012).
Good hand washing practices is an ever-present challenge as stated by the officer due to lack of time, forgetfulness, and inadequate facilities. Staffs do not practice hand washing as per the set standards because sinks are inconveniently located. Supplies of soap and paper towel at times are inadequate and multiple uses of cloth towels harbor bacteria.
According to the officer, the most worrying problem is how to manage multi-drug resistant organisms the (MDRO) mostly for tuberculosis. TB transmission has become a wider problem in the hospital and the communities they serve due to lack of awareness and appropriate measures to prevent the spread (Fauci & Morens, 2012).
Risk Management Strategies Used In the Organization's Infection Control Program
Preventing the spread of infection has been a key component at Kaiser Foundation; the organization established an occupational health program. This program has developed systems for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases not only among health care workers but also targeting visitors and volunteer workers. The program is meant to increase awareness of the risk involved in handling needles and body fluids. It also includes providing vaccinations like hepatitis B and also using adequate protective measures to avoid contagion or injuries (Lynch, 2011).
The hospital has incorporated education programs for early detection, control, and hygiene programs to reduce the risks of patients and worker being infected. This includes being aware of patients on long-term antibiotic regimens. Medical staffs are also sensitized on the new pathogens and changes on how and where healthcare delivery requires more infection prevention and ...
