Information technology has influenced the healthcare industry in a major way. With the integration of new tools, devices, as well as software, the healthcare industry has indeed transformed. This transformation has not been flawless, and nurses have been greatly affected. Improved technology means that certain services are provided faster and better. However, the people involved have had to adapt and change their mode of behavior. The use of the term nursing informatics has been rampant especially with reference to healthcare information technology. Different people describe it differently, but the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society provides a clear explanation. It states that nursing informatics is “the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice” (2019). The above definition or explanation helps to showcase the integration or the merger between the nursing practice and the data/information/knowledge/wisdom continuum. This continuum mainly influences how nurses use information and facts to arrive at their decisions while delivering care to patients. So, it offers a better understanding of how nursing informatics contributes or influences evidence-based practice as well as decision-making.
